What Makes It Uncommon

Hand-Carved Home

Unlike many of our animal friends, birds are not color-blind. In fact, their ability to see color far exceeds our own, so they’ll appreciate this vivid, poppy-red birdhouse even more than we will. Ana and Pablo Hurtado work with local craftspeople in their native Peru to carve the cheerful dwellings from natural gourds and decorate them with traditional artwork that displays cardinals, cedar waxwings, and songbirds. Each one features an opening that’s just the right size to attract smaller birds, like wrens, nuthatches, and bluebirds. A drainage hole in the bottom keeps the interior dry and cozy, and a protective varnish guards against the elements (but we recommend hanging the gourd in a sheltered area for longest life). Handmade by artisans in Peru who are part of the Fair Trade Federation.

Due to the handmade nature of this item, each is unique and will vary.

Partners in life, art, and work, Ana and Pablo Hurtado learned their craft in their Andean village of Cochas, Peru. Together, they share the best of Peruvian craftsmanship while creating opportunities for talented artists and staying committed to sustainable practices. Pablo specializes in drawing while Ana does the fine carvings and guides their team of crafters. They’re joined by their oldest daughter Lizzet and her husband Rodolfo, who represent an up-and-coming generation of Peruvian artists.

Great Mother's Day Gift!

I bought this for my mom to hang outside her family room window. Her previous birdhouse had broken. She was really impressed with the artistry of the house and loved the color!

These birdhouses are beautiful!

I received two of these hand carved Peruvian gourd bird houses for Christmas and they are SO beautiful!! They are a very high quality and the carvings of the birds are so lovely! I can't wait to hang them in the yard - I'm waiting for Spring and will have to choose a place that is a bit protected from the elements so they don't get ruined. I can't wait until the birds move in!

Just what my wife was looking for.

We're looking forward to hanging this in our back yard. It appears well-made and it beautiful.

How do you clean out the birdhouse each season?

Verified reply from Allison

Much like wooden bird houses, they'll need to be cleaned after the nesting brood has completely fledged and no longer returns to the nest.Feeders can be sanitized with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts hot water. Commercial bird feeder cleaning solutions or a mild solution of unscented dish soap is also suitable to clean bird feeders.
